Classroom Policies and Procedures
Attendance:
School starts as soon as your child enters through Laurel Hills’ doors and enters our classroom. We don’t want them to miss one thing! If your child comes into school after 8:30, they will be marked tardy for the day. If your child is going to be absent please call the school nurse and inform her of the absence, as well as the reason for the absence. When your child returns to school please send them in with a note briefly explaining their absence. The following reasons are acceptable excused absences at Laurel Hill; personal illness, religious observances, illness or death of a family member, doctor’s visits, and court appearances. Our new policy is to ensure the safety of your child and we appreciate your understanding and cooperation.
If you would like work to be sent home for the day or days that your child is absent please tell the school in the morning so that we are able to prepare the work for your child in a timely manner.
Class Address Lists:
Besides enabling your child to grow academically, I want your child to grow socially and emotionally as well. An excellent way to foster this is through socialization outside of school. I encourage students to see one another outside of the school atmosphere. I will send home a class phone and address list at the start of the school year. If you do not want your information on the list of certain personal information not included please let me know as soon as possible. I will make any changes necessary to the class list.
Dismissal:
If your child's regular dismissal routine is going to change for the day, you must email me at [email protected]. This year all changes for dismissal need to be emailed as no phone calls during the day will be accepted. In addition, all changes must be emailed to my email by no later then 2:00 each day. If you know your child is going home a different way please send in a note alerting us of the changes.
Some important reminders for dismissal changes are:
*If someone else is picking up your child it must be submitted to the school in writing. That person must also provide identification upon arrival at school.
*If your child is going home with someone else we must have a note from both parents.
* If you would like your child to travel home on a different bus for the day you must make all arrangements with the bus company, as LHS will no longer be able to.
Your cooperation in this matter is vital to a safe dismissal and is greatly appreciated.
Headmaster's Book Club:
In fourth grade 100 pages equals 1 book. Please keep a notebook with a log for your child's reading lists during each month. Please include the name of the book as well as the pages read. The notebooks will be due in class by the end of the month. An assembly will be help during the beginning of the school year to further discuss HBC in the fourth grade. Just a reminder, summer books will not be added into the final count for the year but a special award will be awarded to students with summer reading lists. I encourage each child to get lost in a good book each night and allow their imagination to run wild while reading! Happy reading!
Bathroom Usage:
Children are able to use the bathroom whenever necessary. I do ask that children try not to leave during instruction at my table. However, exceptions will be made as emergencies always arise! Children will sign out of the room and back into the room when leaving to use the bathroom. This is to help ensure the well being of your child during the day. If there are any concerns please feel free to contact me at any time.
Lunch:
At lunch your child will be encouraged to interact with the other students as well as enjoy their lunch for the day. A small meal as well as some snacks, and a drink are necessary for a fulfilling lunch each day. As a reminder, Laurel Hill does not permit soda in school so we ask that you send your child with juice, water or other healthy beverages. Students are asked to stay in their seats and complete lunch in the half hour time slot we have! Students will never be denied their lunch or have it taken away.
Teacher Cafe:
Once a week we will have teacher cafe. I will join your children for a special lunch. During this time I will be able to foster my relationship with your children and get to know them on a more personal level. We will share stories, goals, jokes and dreams with each other all while enjoying our delicious meals.
Free play:
Students will be going outside for free play for most of the year. If it is raining or particularly unpleasant weather we will stay in side for free play. I ask that students change into gym sneakers when possible as we will be running around and enjoying many games during our free play time. Since we will be going outside I ask that you keep that in mind when sending your child to school and ensuring they have the appropriate clothing layers necessary to enjoy themselves.
Gym:
Students will need a pair or running sneakers for Gym Class. Your child will keep these shoes in class when possible, as we will use them during free play as well. Wearing sneakers during Gym will allow your child to fully participate and it will help ensure their safety during the activities.
Special Areas:
I expect my students to show the special area teachers the same respect they show us in the classroom each day. The same classroom rules apply to the special areas. Students are also expected to follow the special areas procedures to ensure a fun and safe learning environment. Special areas allow the students to grow in a variety of other academic areas and study these areas in an in depth manner. Fourth graders will be able to attend Gym with Mr. Lacertosa, Computers and Library with Mrs. Devlopolous, Art with Mrs. Nortman and Spanish with Senora Orenzow. You can check our weekly schedule tab to find out which specials we have on what days during the week! Please make sure your child has the necessary items needed to participate in the special.
